What is Fibre?

What is Fibre to the Home? Fibre to the Home is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fibre. Fibre to the Home is a fast-growing method of providing vastly higher bandwidth to consumers, so that data can travel to and from your home at incredible speeds. It replaces the existing copper infrastructure such as telephone wires and coaxial cable with a faster, more reliable method of delivering internet, TV, and voice services.

How Fibre Works

Fibre optics uses light instead of electricity to carry a signal. Since light travels so quickly, Fibre to the Home can bring an enormous amount of data to and from your home at previously unheard of speeds.

Fibre has a much higher carrying capacity than copper. According to the Fibre to the Home Council, one bundle of fibre not much thicker than a pencil can carry all the world’s communications traffic.

Wightman Fibre to the Home provides voice and other services while offering nearly unlimited bandwidth for a variety of data and video applications. In the future, it will accommodate new broadband products and services that are not possible today.

The Advantages of Fibre

Why Fibre? Why Now?

The Growth of Internet Use

Virtually Unlimited Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred in a set amount of time. It is the increasing number of internet applications – and our increasing use of those applications – that are ultimately driving bandwidth demand to optical fibre, the only medium capable of managing all of it in the long-term. Some examples of technology that require a lot of bandwidth are:

The Future-Proof Home

As cable modem and DSL providers struggle to squeeze higher bandwidth out of their technologies, Wightman's FTTH is able to provide increasing bandwidth without having to change fibre or equipment.

Wightman Telecom believes that FTTH is the ultimate solution to future-proof your home. FTTH provides superior performance and smart economics, and Wightman will install fibre and equipment in your home at no cost (when fibre is being installed in your area).

Fibre to the Home = Increased Home Value

According to sources cited in TecHome Builder magazine November/December (2006), the value of your home will increase if you have Fibre to the Home. As Fibre to the Home continues to expand across North America, there is growing evidence that fibre-equipped homes and offices sell faster and command a price  premium over real estate without fibre. Today’s prospective buyers are looking for a new type of amenity – connectivity.

Community Competitive Advantage

Fibre to the Home gives your community a competitive advantage. Having fibre services is quite appealing for real estate, business, and community as a whole. A future-proof infrastructure and state of the art technology are compelling features to any individual or business considering a move to a smaller community. Now you can offer the home-town advantage with Fibre to the Home. Baby boomers have moved back to the communities where they grew up and now they don’t have to trade connectivity for the quality of life they would experience living in a smaller community. Professionals and others who want to work from home will not be hampered by dated technology.

Fibre: A Vital Connection

Wightman's geographic region expands to many rural towns that are filled with people from all walks of life. Small communities often struggle to maintain business and attract new industry. When students and young adults choose to plant roots and build a life in a community, many factors are considered (including connectivity to the rest of the world). Fibre can contribute to their decision to stay in their rural community. People can live in a small town and effectively build a business, receive an education, and earn a living.

With Wightman's FTTH, these things are acecssible anywhere - even from a small community.

FTTH thus helps define successful communities just as good water, power, and transportation have defined them for years.

Speed

The Need for Speed! How Fast is Fibre?

Through fibre, Wightman now offers our customers one of the fastest internet connections in Canada. Wightman Telecom's internet speeds can't be matched and we are capable of providing speeds up to 1000 Meg.

The beauty of FTTH is that you can scale up quickly and easily. If consumers or businesses request more speed, we can provide it!

Fibre to the Home also has the ability to easily offer you a symmetrical internet connection - download and upload rates at the same speed.

While other providers may have fibre in their network, they don't provide Fibre to the Home. Wightman brings fibre right into your home, enabling us to provide you with the highest internet speeds - and an unlimited connection!

Fibre to the Home Applications

Whatever your device of choice, one of the most exciting aspects of FTTH is that fibre enables you to use the most advanced applications; opening the door to a whole new world of technology that will emerge in the future. Fibre provides you with a wired home - the fastest connection, even when everyone in your house is online.

And it's not just you who can stay connected. FTTH will play an essential role in the lives of your children. As new applications emerge, your children will have access to crucial learning tools and a wealth of information.

Fibre FAQs

Q. What is Fibre to the Home?

A. Fibre to the Home is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fibre. Fibre to the Home is used to replace copper infrastructure such as telephone wires and coaxial cable because fibre optic lines have a higher carrying capacity and are more reliable than copper.

Q. What’s the Difference Between Wightman and Other Companies Who Offer 'Fibre'?

A. Wightman is the only true provider of Fibre to the Home in Harriston, Listowel, Mount Forest, Palmerston and Hanover. Other companies offer fibre to the ‘neighbourhood’, which means you could be sharing fibre optic lines with other people on your street. With Wightman your speeds will be faster and your service superior because you have your own individual fibre optic line running right into your house. Wightman offers the fastest internet speeds in Canada, and we’re a local company with several customer service awards to back our ‘people first’ motto.

Call us today at 1-888-477-2177 to activate your fibre services!

Q. Why is fibre better than copper lines, or wireless service?

A. Optical fibre provides the most robust, secure and cost-effective solution for bringing truly high-speed broadband to individual homes. It can manage a significantly higher data rate (bandwidth) over greater distances, and it is not subject to transmission interference like copper, coaxial cable, and wireless. Optical fibre offers more transmission security, requires less maintenance, and has a significantly longer lifespan than other technologies.

Q. Will I still need a modem with Fibre to the Home?

A. No. A modem is no longer required.

Q. What about satellite? Most people have that choice, don’t they?

A. Satellite offers video, of course, but it cannot offer robust broadband internet service because the subscriber can only download the signal. Upload is normally provided through the subscriber’s telephone lines, which limits transmission speeds. Another drawback with satellite is that it is location and weather sensitive.

Q. How is an ONT powered? Does it require a battery?

A. An ONT is powered by electricity but requires a battery in the event of a power outage. Your battery will provide emergency power for several hours of talk time during an outage.

Q. How much power does an ONT consume?

A. The ONT will consume less than $5.00 of electricity over the course of a year.

Q. Is there any cost to me for fibre installation?

A. No. Fibre installation is free if you subscribe to our service during the initial installation period in your area.

Q. What if I do not agree to have fibre installed now and decide I want it later?

A. Customers who wait until after fibre is installed in their neighborhood will incur an installation fee.

Q. If I am a current Wightman customer, will you automatically fibre my home?

A. No. Current customers should visit their local Fibre to the Home sales office to sign up (Hanover: 825 10th Street, beside A&W Restaurant OR Walkerton: 203 Durham St. E., corner of Durham Street & Jackson Street).

Q. What happens to my three year commitment if I move?

A. The commitment will be canceled with no cost if you move from your current address.

Q. Can I keep my current television provider?

A. Yes. However, bundling all your services with Wightman should provide you with more savings.

Q. If I switch my phone, internet, or television provider to Wightman, will I still incur a cost with my present provider?

A. No. Once you switch to Wightman for a service there will be no more costs from your previous provider for that service.

Q. Are Wightman’s prices for phone, internet, and TV over fibre introductory?

A. No. Wightman is proud to offer the same rates for all our customers, every month. In addition, your price for services is guaranteed not to increase during your commitment period.
